Advanced cartography
Issue
The current status map of Nagios can become very difficult to understand if there are lots of resources. Furthermore, we could look for additional viewing functionalities, different from the current one ("network node" view mode).
Other open source solutions work fine but they can become difficult to maintain. Also, they do not offer enough options to restrict their access, it is therefore hard to use them in case of a shared service.
Solutions
Merethis created an advanced cartography plugin. Based on a "Drill Down" navigation, with the most critical states brought up to upper levels, you can explore your network thanks to customized views that suit to your needs (business, functional, technical...).
The refreshment frequency is completely customizable and allows you to quickly find the real problem in your network.
Technically, the advanced cartography uses a client/server technology, with XML data transfering. The client is developed with Java, on a GEF framework. In order to make the plugin run, a Java virtual machine is required, the version needs to be 1.5 or higher. This client is distributed under Linux, Windows and Mac in executable version, and can be deployed through a Java Web Start package (Windows).
The creation of views is done very simply, it is also totally synchronized with elements that are monitored by Centreon Nagios.
